Free Pattern: Basket Weave Hat

While waiting to launch Forward Knots on Etsy, I will be sharing a few patterns here!  This one, the Basket Weave Hat, is one of my favorites and is simple enough for a dedicated beginner, or a quick project for a more advanced crocheter!  Enjoy!

Supplies: 

US J Hook

Yarn/Tapestry Needle

About 2 Skeins Worsted Weight Yarn

Notes:

Ch 2 counts as first hdc in top of hat, does not count in basket stitch

Ch 2 at the beginning of each round

The basket stitch is worked in groups with 3 rows in each, you will alternate between starting with FPDC/BPDC to make the pattern.

Any increase/decrease in this pattern must be in groups of 8 stitches to ensure even alternating between FPDC and BPDC in pattern.

Abbreviations:

FPDC - Front Post Double Crochet

BPDC - Back Post Double Crochet

CH - Chain

SC - Single Crochet

HDC - Half Double Crochet

DC - Double Crochet

Width is 11"

Gauge is 3" for 4 FPDC, 4 BPDC for basket stitch

Round 1: 8 HDC in magic circle, join

Round 2: CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 2 HDC in each around, join (16 HDC)

Round 3:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 1 HDC in next stitch, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next stitch* Repeat * around, join (24 HDC)

Round 4:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 1 HDC in next 2 stitches, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next 2 stitches* Repeat * around, join (32 HDC)

Round 5:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 1 HDC in next 3 stitches, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next 3 stitches* Repeat * around, join (40 HDC)

Round 6:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 1 HDC in next 4 stitches, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next 4 stitches* Repeat * around, join (48 HDC)

Round 7:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 1 HDC in next 5 stitches, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next 5 stitches* Repeat * around, join (56 HDC)

Round 8:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch as CH, 1 HDC in next 6 stitches, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next 6 stitches* Repeat * around, join (64 HDC)

Round 9: CH 2, 1 HDC in each around, join

*BASKET WEAVE BEGINS HERE*

Round 10: CH 2, *FPDC in next 4 stitches, BPDC in next 4stitches* Repeat around, join

Round 11 & 12: Repeat round 10

(1st group)

Round 13: CH 2, *BPDC in next 4 stitches, FPDC in next 4stitches* Repeat around, join

Round 14 & 15: Repeat round 13

(2nd group)

Rounds 16, 17, 18: Repeat 1st group - Rounds 10-12

(3rd group)

Rounds 19, 20, 21: Repeat 2nd group - Rounds 13-15

(4th group)

Rounds 22 & 23: CH1, 1 SC in each around, join
